Fenton identifies riverbank damage after flood; emergency stabilization ordered

A moderate flood event caused temporary closure of River Road and led to erosion and riverbank loss in multiple locations, city officials reported. Public works identified five locations with riverbank loss; two sites presented immediate risk to city infrastructure including the bike path. The city contracted RB Wagner for emergency stabilization and to complete stabilization at all affected sites.

Officials said cleanup reopened River Road, but subsequent assessment found additional damage at riverbanks requiring rock stabilization. Discussion included aesthetics and use of concrete from street projects versus additional purchased riprap; public works staff said appearance would be improved by placing larger riprap material. The board noted that getting large stone into the riverbank areas presents logistical challenges.

Minor flood damage also affected the Fenton Sports Complex concession stand and maintenance garage, with approximately six inches of water infiltration; Servpro has been engaged for restoration. Aldermen asked staff about ongoing monitoring of bank movement and were advised that RB Wagner has been on-site and the bank was not currently moving but further work and materials procurement are being coordinated.
