The Stillwater Area Public Schools Board approved a resolution to rename Fred C. and Catherine B. Anderson Elementary School as Bayport Elementary, effective July 1, 2026.
Mark provided historical context: the building opened in 1919 as Bayport Elementary and was renamed in 1996 following a grant and renovation. During design work for the new Bayport building, community input consistently favored returning the school to its original name. Mark said the Anderson family is supportive of the change.
Chair Sherman moved to approve the resolution. The board conducted a roll‑call vote and each named board member voted Yes; the resolution passed unanimously. Staff said the district will work with the Minnesota Department of Education and other agencies to update official records and noted the current official building name will remain for the rest of the school year before the July 1, 2026 change takes effect.
The board did not specify any policy changes to the naming process and staff said they consulted the district attorney when drafting the resolution to ensure procedural compliance.
