Gautier approves subaward with Mississippi DEQ to study and maintain Shepherd State Park trails

The Gautier City Council voted Dec. 17 to authorize the city manager to execute a subaward agreement with the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality for the Shepherd State Park Recreational Enhancement Project.
Staff described the award as a RESTORE-related grant that funded a trails assessment, trail maintenance work and educational components for the ranger house. "This is just a grant that we received for clearing all the walking paths and everything," a staff member said. Staff explained the grant would pay for a study of existing trails, recommendations to bring trails up to standard and maintenance for roughly two years, subject to the duration and availability of the grant funds.
Councilman College moved to authorize the subaward; Councilman Jackson seconded and the motion carried. Councilman College recused himself from the record after the motion. Council discussion indicated the grant’s scope includes trail assessment, selected improvements and a maintenance program funded for a limited period tied to the grant award.
The council did not state a dollar amount in the meeting record beyond staff’s remark that the project budget appeared to be "more than $10,000." The staff summary references federal RESTORE funds as the source for components of the request.
