A sustained public comment period at the Dec. 17 North Miami Beach commission meeting focused heavily on sanitation service failures and neighborhood conditions.
Multiple residents described missed trash and recycling pickups near their homes and difficulty reaching customer service; one longtime resident said crews had failed to collect trash for eight days and that the city’s routing rules had recently changed without adequate notice. "They don't pick it up," one commenter said, explaining that she had been told to carry her can to an alley but had no alley access. Several speakers asked the city to hold the contractor accountable and requested clearer, multilingual communication about collection rules and schedules.
Other speakers raised independent issues: safety concerns at the intersection of NE 150th Street and NE 12th Avenue (cars reportedly have crashed into front yards near a day care); requests for additional county coordination on traffic engineering; and calls to ensure the proposed trolley consultant work is not duplicated or wasteful given limited city resources.
Commissioners acknowledged the calls for better operational oversight and asked staff to return with data on missed pickups, multifamily billing impacts and comparative commercial rates in neighboring jurisdictions. City staff and Coastal representatives were present and said they would follow up with residents who registered complaints during the meeting.
The public comment segment also included tributes and multiple invitations to upcoming community events and a request from a youth coach for a parks fee waiver; staff said they would follow up on facility‑use waivers and liability forms.
