The Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami (MOCA) introduced a partnership with the City of North Miami Beach on Dec. 17 that will expand cultural access and year‑round programming for residents.
Shama Sheldon, MOCA’s executive director, told the commission that North Miami Beach residents will receive a 20% discount on museum admission and that MOCA will offer a free youth program hosted at the North Miami Beach Discovery Library. MOCA said artwork created in the program will be included in the museum’s annual community exhibition in spring 2025.
"We're looking forward to welcoming more residents and constituents to the museum and offering some of our services," Sheldon said, describing MOCA as a cultural anchor in the region. Board chair Dr. Rudy Moise and other trustees joined the presentation and commissioners accepted a commemorative plaque marking the partnership.
Vice Mayor Phil Smith and other commissioners framed the agreement as an economic‑development and community‑engagement effort; the city clerk said the partnership is a signed contract and presentations will begin in December 2024. Commissioners requested that staff and MOCA coordinate promotion and logistics so residents know how to enroll in the program.
The commission did not vote on a funding item during the presentation; staff said details on program implementation and promotional outreach will be handled through the library and cultural programming staff.
