The Gary Common Council used its Dec. 10 meeting to present an official citation honoring John McLeod on his 90th birthday.
Councilwoman Mary Brown read a citation that said McLeod was born in Gary in 1934, attended Fravel High School and Central State University, served in the Army and taught for more than 30 years at Ernie Pyle Elementary School. Brown noted McLeod’s long community involvement, his relationship with former Mayor Rudy Clay, membership in Galilee Missionary Baptist Church and Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity, and his role in local campaigns and civic life.
John McLeod addressed the council and thanked Mary Brown and the council. “It’s honored to stand before you this fine council,” McLeod said, adding that he attributes his longevity to faith, good health habits and gratitude. Council members praised McLeod’s years of service and recalled his assistance to multiple council members.
The presentation concluded with public recognition and thanks from the council president and colleagues.
