VINHub launches workforce, research-reactor and supply-chain initiatives

VINHub provided a progress update to the authority, identifying three initial initiatives to support Virginia’s nuclear and advanced energy ecosystem.
Bob Bailey, representing the VINHub, said the hub is starting with a comprehensive workforce strategy that emphasizes building an educational pipeline and K–12 outreach, and includes coordination with community colleges and the Virginia Energy Workforce Consortium. "Building an educational pipeline is probably a big part of that, which is what April was just talking about," Bailey said.
Bailey described a longer-term, ambitious project to reestablish a research and test reactor in Virginia as an education and research asset. "Getting a research and test reactor back in Virginia is a big long term ambitious project," he said, and noted that initial work will examine reactor design, siting options and operating parameters.
A third VINHub effort is a supply-chain analysis focused on both fuel and component manufacturing within Virginia. Bailey said the assessment will identify gaps and opportunities to expand in-state capabilities that support reactor projects and nuclear supply chains.
VINHub also said it will coordinate workforce planning with VNEC and the Energy Workforce Consortium to develop training pathways and education plans that link K–12, community colleges and four-year programs to industry needs.
