Port approves temporary installation of Raygun Gothic Rocketship at Pier 14

SAN FRANCISCO ' The Port Commission approved a temporary public-art installation June 8, allowing the Black Rock Arts Foundation to site a 40-foot Raygun Gothic Rocketship on port property between the Agriculture Building and Pier 14 for about 14 months.
Dan Hudock of the port's planning and development division described the proposal and the no-fee license conditions: the artist team must provide structural engineering, installation and removal costs, liability insurance and must remove the sculpture within 30 days of a port notice. Estimated installation and removal costs total roughly $50,000; the port will contribute about $15,000 from an existing public-access/open-space fund and cover electrical costs.
David Shulman, one of the lead artists, said the project was built by a community of Bay Area artists and would be a static, sealed installation with an interpretive display. PJ Johnston, president of the San Francisco Arts Commission, and a representative from the mayor's office spoke in support of the proposal. Commissioners expressed enthusiasm and approved Resolution 10-42 on a voice vote.
The sculpture is slated for installation in early August with an opening event around August 10 and would remain in place through October 2011 if the schedule proceeds as presented.
