Bayview residents press SFPUC on persistent digester odors; commissioners say staff will report back

‘‘If billions of dollars are spent on the digesters, what is happening...When will the stench be addressed?'' the commenter asked, also saying residents felt ‘‘kept in the dark’’ about timing and remedies. He cited community benefits funding, saying 5% of a $6,000,000,000 program—about $150,000,000—had been set aside for community benefits and questioned how those dollars were being used.
Commissioners responded during the SSIP discussion by acknowledging that odor is a visible, ongoing concern and asking staff to return with focused updates that address ‘‘surface level concerns’’ such as odor mitigation and community outreach. One commissioner said repairs made while the program was paused had given residents false hope and asked for clearer short‑term communications on what neighbors should expect.
The commission did not adopt immediate new policy but directed staff to provide further reporting and to consider convening additional meetings and outreach specific to odor mitigation and project timelines.
