SFPUC authorizes new recognition program to honor employees and partners

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission voted to authorize the general manager to institute a new employee and partner recognition program, updating the long‑paused O'Shaughnessy awards.
Juliet Ellis, Assistant General Manager for External Affairs, told commissioners the proposed program would restore an excellence and innovation element that was suspended in 2013–2014, expand eligibility to contractors, consultants, public agencies and nonprofit partners, align awards with SFPUC core values (service, excellence, inclusiveness, stewardship), and culminate in an annual Commission event.
Commissioners welcomed the proposal, thanked Commissioner Courtney for leadership on the item, and asked staff to provide clear, objective selection criteria to avoid perceived favoritism when contractors are eligible for awards. Staff committed to return with more detailed selection procedures before launching the program.
The Commission voted to authorize the general manager to implement the program, with staff directed to present selection guidelines and a timeline for a fall launch.
