San Francisco Police Chief Gregory Pea told the Police Commission on Sept. 10 that the department is investigating two recent homicides—one on Nichols Way in the Bayview and one at Fourth and Cap Street—that occurred since the commission's last meeting. "We have had, unfortunately, 2 homicides since our last meeting," the chief said, adding that the department's clearance rate is up and investigators are actively working both cases. The chief gave a year-to-date homicide total of 26.
The chief told commissioners that, despite the recent fatal incidents, overall violent crime and property crime have declined this year and that shootings are down. "It seems to be a bit of an irony that, with crime down... when we do suffer fatal violence, we continue to have the conversation," he said.
A major portion of the report described Fleet Week and city emergency-preparedness planning. The chief said a multi-agency tabletop exercise simulated response three days into a "7-plus" magnitude earthquake and involved about 140 agencies. "A lot of people think that Fleet Week is just the Blue Angels, and I don't think that they understand the degree of emergency preparedness that goes in," he said, urging continued resident readiness in earthquake country.
Commissioners acknowledged the report and asked for periodic updates. The commission did not take formal action on the chief's report but scheduled continued oversight and follow-up at upcoming meetings.
