OCC: 36 sustained complaints this year, 84 sustained allegations; majority neglect-of-duty findings

Joyce Hicks, director of the Office of Citizen Complaints, told the Police Commission on Sept. 3 that, as of last week, the OCC had sustained 36 complaints totaling 84 sustained allegations. She provided a breakdown: 53 percent of the sustained allegations were for neglect of duty, 35 percent for unwarranted action, 8 percent for conduct reflecting discredit and the remaining 4 percent comprised three separate allegations (one for necessary force, one for an alleged slur and one for discourtesy). "In those 36 complaints, we sustained 84 allegations," Hicks said.
Hicks said the OCC will provide the August comprehensive statistical report next week. Commissioner Turman commended Hicks and OCC staff for timely follow-up and for providing detailed information that helps spot trends and assist the department's response.
