SFPD reports drop in violent crime, announces 50 promotions

San Francisco — At the Aug. 27 Police Commission meeting Chief Sir delivered a brief crime update reporting declines in violent crime and highlighted personnel changes.
The chief said July year-to-date violent crime is down 26% and overall Part 1 crime is down about 4%. Shooting victims were reported down about 13% year-to-date, and homicides stood at 25 year-to-date. Chief Sir also discussed recent investigations: a domestic-violence-related homicide on Peralta Street with an arrest and booking reported, and ongoing investigations into a pedestrian fatality near Geary and Lyon and a hit-and-run that killed a 2-year-old on Mission Street.
On personnel, the chief announced that roughly 50 members had been promoted to the rank of sergeant or supervisor, with assignments to be issued the following day. Commissioners used the report to press for further data on the racial makeup of stops and arrests and asked about the status of body-worn camera procurement; the chief said procurement and policy agreements are close and that the Office of Contract Administration is reviewing the contract.
The report provided the commission with the current operational picture and generated follow-up requests for more detailed racial-disaggregation of enforcement data.
