Multiple community members and nonprofit representatives urged the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission to examine how arts funding was allocated in Bayview Hunters Point and to intervene to keep Southeast Community College open.
Doctor Jackson asked the commission to schedule a discussion at its next meeting about how funding was distributed to Bayview Hunters Point arts groups and said no longstanding arts group in the neighborhood had received the grant funds discussed. She also said she had received notice about the possible closing of Southeast Community College and urged the commission to help keep the facility open.
Angela Armstrong, a founder of the Hunters Point Art Gallery and Cultural Center, said her organization — operating in Bayview since 1969 — has received “no funding” for more than 45 years and asked to be placed on the Oct. 22 agenda so artists can present and ask questions about a pilot program that funded muralists and how eligibility for grants was determined.
Eddie Ahn, representing BrightLine Defense Project, a public‑policy nonprofit, asked the commission for rent relief for the Southeast Community College facility and said the center is vital to the community.
Commissioners agreed to request a representative from the Art Commission to attend and to notify the speakers when that agenda item is scheduled. Staff said they would attempt to schedule the conversation and notify the speakers of the date.
