Police Commission honors Officer Matt Lobre for July 4 rescue

The San Francisco Police Commission on July 10 presented a Certificate of Merit and Appreciation to Officer Matt Lobre for entering a burning building on July 4 and rescuing an elderly woman.

Captain McGuckran and Chief Gregory Peasey described how Officer Lobre, a 15‑year veteran of the San Francisco Police Department, was the first responder to arrive at a fire on the 2000 block of Pine Street. According to the account presented to the commission, Officer Lobre forced entry to a third‑floor unit, located a woman suffering burns and escorted her outside; both the officer and the woman were taken to hospital, with the officer treated for smoke inhalation and heat exhaustion.

"He did everything he could to get the elderly woman outside," the presenter said when introducing Lobre to the dais. "You're gonna find when I give Matt his chance to speak, he doesn't say much. He did it on his own, and he did it because you're driven to do it." Chief Gregory Peasey added that the officers’ actions were "life‑saving" in an otherwise tragic incident.

Officer Lobre, accepting the commission's recognition, said the response left him "speechless" and that he felt he had been "in the right place at the right time." Commissioners thanked him for his courage. Commissioner Kingsley specifically asked about the officer's health; Lobre said he was feeling better.

The commission noted it will bring forward certificates for other officers involved in recent emergency responses at a future meeting. The presentation concluded with unanimous praise from commissioners and no formal action beyond the commendation.
