At the April 24 commission meeting, deputy staff presenting the chief's report outlined recent major incidents, training milestones and community engagement efforts.
The department reported a homicide earlier that afternoon on Hudson Street; the investigation was described as in its early stages. The deputy chief also summarized a recent officer-involved shooting in the Dogpatch/De Haro area, a bank robbery on Irving Street, and other shootings being investigated by the Gang Task Force.
The deputy chief reported year-to-date homicides "are down about 40%" and gave the figures cited in the meeting: "Last year at this time, we had 19 homicides, and today, as we speak, we have 12." The department also said auto thefts, burglaries from vehicles and arsons were down in recent comparative periods, and noted 33 officers completed crisis-intervention training (CIT), bringing the program's trained officers to about 150.
Commissioners praised the department's response to national events and local town halls after critical incidents. They asked for updates on investigations where appropriate and for public-facing materials explaining how case prioritization and solvability factors affect reporting outcomes at front counters.
