San Francisco Police Commission re-elects President Mazuko and elects Julius Terman vice president amid objections about timing

The San Francisco Police Commission voted 5-1 on May 21 to retain President Tim Mazuko for another one-year term and to elect Commissioner Julius Terman as vice president.

The nomination to keep Mazuko as president was made from the floor and seconded; after a brief public comment period that included calls from residents and at least one commissioner to delay elections until the commission's seventh seat is filled, the roll call produced five affirmative votes and one dissenting vote (Commissioner Chan). The same margin carried the vice-presidential vote for Terman.

Supporters on the dais praised Mazuko's leadership and thanked outgoing Vice President Marshall for years of service. Dissenting commissioners and several public commenters said postponement would allow the incoming seventh commissioner to participate and add legitimacy to leadership decisions; commissioners who voted to proceed said the rules permit elections now and that the current membership was entitled to fill its leadership posts.

The votes followed an extended public-comment period where some residents urged the commission to allow broader participation before changing leadership. The Commission recorded the formal motions and called the roll before announcing the results: both motions passed 5 to 1.

The Commission indicated the appointments are effective immediately and said they would continue scheduled work, including forthcoming rulemaking and community meetings. The meeting proceeded to other agenda items after the votes.
