The Police Commission on Jan. 9 postponed one patrol-special appointment and approved another.
Commissioners reviewed the application for Moises Romero to be appointed assistant patrol special officer to Patrol Special Officer Calvin Wiley. Commissioners and staff raised follow-up questions about a temporary restraining order, circumstances of a prior resignation, and whether Romero's current employment with the Department of Homeland Security posed a secondary-employment conflict. City attorney guidance and the commission's legal adviser noted that background files and certain application information are confidential and that public questioning is therefore limited. The commission voted to continue the Romero appointment for two weeks to allow written questions and confidential follow-up through the sergeant handling background checks.
Separately, the commission moved to adopt and accept the application of Edward Yim as assistant patrol special officer to Patrol Special Officer Scott Hart. After a roll call vote, the motion passed unanimously; commissioners present voted "Aye." The item was recorded as passed in the public minutes.
Commissioners also requested public copies of patrol-special policies and a clarification of complaint and discipline channels that apply to patrol specials, noting public interest in oversight and accountability for those positions.
