Chief reports falling violent crime, holiday deployments and DNA-lab review

At the Nov. 30 Police Commission meeting, the chief reported that violent crime trended downward — about 7% lower year-to-date — and that the department’s homicide total stood at 47 for the year, substantially below the level reported in 2008. The chief credited officer-community partnerships for the trend and outlined staffing and deployment plans for holiday events and an anticipated home playoff game.
The chief also reviewed the Behavioral Science Unit survey results and announced that the department had added staff in the DNA lab. In response to media attention and prior concerns, he said the department invited ASCLAD, the national accreditation/certification body named in the record, to return to inspect the DNA lab at the department’s expense "to go over what they've already certified," and that the department believes it is in compliance with standards.
Commissioners thanked officers for professional conduct during recent large events and asked for updates about BSU and the DNA lab in future reports. The chief noted a promotional ceremony planned for Dec. 12 and encouraged public attendance.
