SFPD chief reports steady crime levels, redeployments and a union contract vote that closed this year—s budget gap

At the July 13 meeting the SFPD chief told the San Francisco Police Commission that overall crime remained relatively steady week-to-week, but staff responded to recent shootings with redeployment strategies and renewed focus on specific corridors.

The chief said beat officers were returned to Third Street and the gang task force increased patrols on Market Street after a string of shootings in that corridor. He said the redeployments likely contributed to a quieter week on Market Street and that the department would continue redeployments through the summer.

On staffing, the chief reported that 47 young people graduated from the PAL cadet program and that the first class of CPSA recruits had graduated this week after "a little bit of a kerfuffle." He noted Tenderloin Station currently showed about 83 officers on the books, clarifying reports that had suggested larger shortfalls.

On budget, the chief said the rank-and-file police association voted approximately 81% to accept a contract reopener from the mayor—s office; he said that acceptance effectively closed the department—s budget shortfall for the year.

Commissioners asked about training and whether an academy class would be feasible in the fall given restored funding. The chief said $3,000,000 had been put back into the police department budget and, if the funds persisted, the department could potentially run an academy class this year and seek federally funded sessions to expand training.

Next steps: commissioners requested updates on redeployment outcomes and a short presentation on officer services (mental-health and trauma response) at an upcoming meeting to inform priority-setting.
