Commission schedules drafting process for a new community-policing general order with community input

Commissioner Angela Chan used the June 15 meeting to request that the commission schedule a bi-monthly CIT update and a focused discussion on community policing. "I think we should just try to define it in a useful way," she said, urging practical next steps and community engagement.
Chief Gregory said a committee is drafting a new general order on community policing and that a draft will be submitted to the commission before Sept. 15. "Their first meeting is next week," he said, and described planned community meetings, consultations with elected representatives (including Supervisor Campos' office) and input from department personnel and community groups. The chief said the intent is for the general order to become a department policy after public comment and commission consideration.
Commissioner James Slaughter suggested letting the working group get some "miles under their belt" and receive an update after a longer interval; Commissioner Kingsley urged periodic briefings and suggested rotating commissioner attendance at community forums to remain apprised while preserving quorum rules.
The commission did not adopt a final policy at the meeting; it recorded the schedule for a draft to be presented for consideration before Sept. 15 and agreed to continued engagement between staff, community groups and commissioners.
