Police Commission appoints working group to update priorities, moves disciplinary business to closed session

At its March 30 meeting the San Francisco Police Commission discussed revising its priority list and approved procedural motions to handle disciplinary matters in closed session.
Commissioners debated adding several items to the commission's top-tier agenda, including revamping discipline-case procedures, advancing community policing priorities, and conducting an audit overview of department practices. Several commissioners urged flexibility to accommodate current events and to allow the incoming chief of police a substantial role in setting medium- and long-term priorities. After debate the commission agreed that a small working group (Commissioners Slaughter, Marshall and Kingsley were suggested) would take the retreat-generated list and newly proposed items, apply the commission's stated prioritization criteria, and return recommendations for formal adoption.
On routine business the commission approved the consent calendar (Secure Communities monthly audits) and a request for Captain John Joseph Garrity to accept a jacket donated by Larry Seshuk; those items were moved and seconded and passed without objection.
Later the commission voted to hold item 8 (disciplinary cases) in closed session; the chair directed parties not involved to leave the room. The panel then voted to withhold disclosure of any or all discussion held in that closed session. The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn.
Ending: Commissioners asked the working group to return a proposed red-tier priority list at a future meeting; no schedule was set at this session for formal adoption of the revised list.
