SFPUC ramps up sewer-inspection work, aims to exceed 100 miles this fiscal year

Tommy Mawala, Assistant General Manager for the Waste Water Enterprise, told commissioners the sewer inspection and cleaning program is expanding to meet master‑plan and R&R priorities.
Mawala said the program had inspected roughly 80 miles as of March and that a contractor hired two weeks earlier was expected to increase mileage so the utility can meet or exceed a 100‑mile target this fiscal year and move toward a 150‑mile annual target over the next several years. He described how the work supports condition assessment and prioritization for replacement, how teams coordinate with paving and other departments to avoid repeated street digs, and the operational constraints posed by aging vehicles and equipment.
Commissioners asked about staffing and budgets; Mawala said four people had been hired recently, vacancies remain and the citywide hiring freeze constrains recruitment. He also described equipment improvements such as new 360‑degree camera capabilities and the use of Maximo (a computerized maintenance management system) to better track work.
Mawala said the inspection ramp-up is intended to reduce unplanned calls and better prioritize R&R investments.
