Chief George Gascon reported the San Francisco Police Department's weekly crime statistics to the Police Commission on Oct. 13, saying year-to-date totals show overall reductions compared with the same period last year.
"We continue to be at a 9% reduction year to date," the chief said, adding the figure represents about a 10% reduction in property crimes and roughly a 4% reduction in violent crime, for "2,887 less crimes year to date than last year at the same time." He noted an exception in the short-term rolling four-week cycle, where robberies and a small uptick in aggravated assaults produced a 7% increase (34 crimes) in that period.
Gascon said the city was down one homicide year-to-date (37 this year versus 38 last year) but cautioned weekly and monthly totals fluctuate and require confirmation. "Today, we're at 37 against 38, which I'm being told. I have not confirmed that," he said.
Commissioners did not vote on operational changes at the meeting; the chief framed the report as a regular update and said staff would continue to monitor short-term rises in robberies while maintaining longer-term crime-reduction efforts.
The chief's figures were presented as department statistics; the commission did not provide an independent verification during the Oct. 13 meeting.
