Commander says Bayview shooting suspect arrested; SFPD reports increase in gun seizures

Commander Keith Crenshaw told the San Francisco Police Commission that private security guarding a property in the Bayview observed a heated encounter with four non-residents that escalated when one person drew a semiautomatic revolver and fired at private security. The suspect fled and was later identified as Kalen Johnson in a wanted bulletin; a fugitive arrest team arrested Johnson the same evening and officers recovered the weapon.

Crenshaw said a tactical entry was made at a residence; the suspect was not there during the initial entry but was later arrested by the fugitive arrest team. The commander said the department has increased gang enforcement and that in recent major operations the department had seized "almost 30 guns" and taken almost 50 individuals into custody; he later said patrol operations had seized close to 80 weapons year to date and that gun seizures have doubled compared with the prior year.

Commissioners asked about preventive measures and outreach; Crenshaw described targeted zone strategies, increased patrols and community outreach including bilingual flyers and "safe haven" business partnerships that allow residents to seek help from participating businesses. Commissioners asked for an update in the next few weeks on outreach to colleges and community education to address acquaintance assaults and binge drinking as contributing factors.

The commission praised the commander for the reported increase in gun seizures and asked staff to continue community partnerships and targeted prevention efforts.
