Heather Dempsey of the Tuolumne River Trust delivered a report to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission on Aug. 14 urging commissioners to consider alternatives to proposals that would increase diversions from the Tuolumne River.
Dempsey said the report, produced with technical assistance from the Pacific Institute, summarizes concerns about conservation demand studies underlying diversion proposals and concludes with recommendations for more sustainable paths forward. "As the environmental review process is open now and moving forward, we do hope that you will seriously consider alternatives to diverting more water from the Tuolumne," she told the commission.
Dempsey thanked departing Commissioner Adam Werbach for his service and offered the Trust's continuing willingness to work cooperatively with the PUC. Commissioners acknowledged receipt of the report and expressed appreciation for the Trust's engagement; staff did not announce any immediate regulatory action tied to the presentation.
The presentation was entered into the record and commissioners indicated staff and legal review will continue as part of the environmental review process for any proposed diversions.
