Ingleside meeting honors fallen officer and a postal-service rescue; public commenters press the commission on alleged police mistakes and unsolved killings
Summary
The commission presented a memorial shadow box to the family of Officer Michael Walsh and accepted a postal-service certificate for Officer Kevin Reitmeier; during public comment residents praised the station’s new efforts but also described mistreatment, a mistaken arrest and an unsolved homicide and asked for accountability and OCC involvement.
At the start of the meeting the commission and Ingleside Station honored the family of Officer Michael (Mike) Walsh, who died July 2, 2009. Captain David Lazar presented a shadow box of Walsh’s badge and awards to the family; Flo Walsh thanked officers for their support and described the role the department had played during the funeral and the family’s grieving (SEG 236–SEG 301).
Later the U.S. Postal Inspection Service’s field inspector presented a certificate of appreciation to Officer Kevin Reitmeier for his role in stopping a suspect allegedly involved in a March 7 homicide in Clayton, California and assisting USPS investigators (SEG 373–SEG 433).
Public comment: residents used the extended public comment period to both praise and press the department. Supporters told the commission they welcomed more foot-beat officers and the station’s outreach. Multiple residents raised separate complaints that they asked the commission and the department to investigate further:
- Mistaken identity/arrest allegation: Joanna Hernandez described her son’s arrest in the Mission District, saying officers held him at gunpoint and later apologized when they realized he had been misidentified. Hernandez asked that the police report be corrected and asked the commission to hold officers accountable; she was advised to pursue the Office of Citizen Complaints and to speak with captain(s) from Mission Station as well (SEG 3268–SEG 3330).
- Unsolved homicide: Paulette Brown spoke about her son’s 2006 murder and said she had received little case development since then; she asked why investigations remain unresolved and urged additional follow-up (SEG 3458–SEG 3550).
Responses and next steps: commissioners and staff responded from the dais; Captain Lazar and other officials offered to follow up offline, suggested filing with OCC for formal review and encouraged direct contact with Mission Station leadership where the contact originated. The commission closed public comment after numerous speakers and proceeded with routine business and a closed-session vote (SEG 3191–SEG 4020).
Ending: the meeting combined honors for officers with substantive community grievances, and department staff committed to follow-up with individuals who raised allegations of misconduct or to explain investigative status to families.
