Commission hears plan to target nightclub violence after early-year homicides

Chief Fong said the department saw a difficult year for homicides and identified nightclub-related violence as an area of concern. He described steps the department has taken and will continue, including narcotics enforcement, targeted enforcement at identified "hot spot" clubs, directing station permit officers to inspect security plans and compliance, and using code-enforcement or permit-revocation processes where venue security fails. He said additional resources have been assigned for nightclub closing times and that the department is coordinating with property owners, promoters and other city agencies to address environmental safety around venues.
The chief said one early-year homicide occurred at an unpermitted or problem club and another occurred at a Pier 50 waterfront venue; he reported a suspect arrest in the waterfront case. He announced a forthcoming nightclub summit, organized with the Mayor—s Office of Criminal Justice, to take a citywide rather than solely policing approach to nightclub safety.
Commissioners emphasized balancing public safety with maintaining legitimate business activity in areas such as Broadway and North Beach, and several commissioners said they would attend or want notice of the summit. The commission asked the chief to provide follow-up briefings and a confirmed summit date.
The discussion also referenced broader violence-prevention efforts, including collaborations with community and city agencies and a violence-prevention plan referenced by the chief that will involve public housing and other stakeholders.
