Commissioner Tom Mazzuco moved the selection and Commissioner Petro de Jesus seconded; the commission then conducted public comment and a roll‑call vote. Chair Theresa Sparks, Vice President Joe Marshall, Commissioner Petro de Jesus, Commissioner Tom Mazzuco and Commissioner David Onick each recorded “Aye,” and the motion carried.
Commissioners said they prioritized experience recruiting law‑enforcement leaders, familiarity with San Francisco and a capacity to run broad community outreach during the search. Commissioners noted that some proposals were under $50,000 while the Murray/PERF joint proposal would require Civil Service Commission approval because the estimated contract amount exceeds that threshold.
The commission said it will request that the search firm vet internal and external candidates on a level playing field, present a candidate profile informed by community input, and forward up to three finalists to the mayor as allowed under the charter process.
Commissioners emphasized plans for multiple community meetings and invited stakeholders to submit preferences for chief characteristics to the commission office.
