"From my perspective, a very immediate issue that should be on the agenda is the issue of the city sanctuary statute," Commissioner Grama said, urging an early discussion. Commissioner Lee asked whether commissioners would be "open to schedule this hearing after we have a clearer ... opinion from the City Attorney's Office," arguing an opinion could affect how the department carries out related work.
Commissioners discussed holding a joint hearing with the juvenile commission to examine issues affecting undocumented juveniles and asked staff to pass the sanctuary statute item near the top of the scheduling list so it can be heard as soon as appropriate. No final policy action was taken; the commissioners asked staff to seek the City Attorney's opinion and organize a hearing date when the legal guidance and a quorum of commissioners are available.
