The Police Commission approved a $65,000 non‑matching grant from the California Department of Boating and Waterways at its March 12 meeting to repower two San Francisco Police Department vessels and update instruments on an aging boat.
Sergeant Danny Lopez, officer in charge of the Marine Unit, said the department typically gets about 1,000 engine hours from a motor and several vessels were operating past recommended lifespans (one cited at more than 1,600 hours). The grant would repower two boats and replace 16‑year‑old navigation instruments on another vessel. Lopez described the proposal as essential maintenance for the unit.
Commissioners moved and seconded approval of the grant and discussed scheduling a future public briefing on the Marine Unit. Sergeant Lopez agreed and suggested a boat‑based briefing could be arranged. The motion to approve the item was called and the chair said, “Without objection, so ordered.”
