Police Commission honors seven civilians who intervened in assault in Northern District

The Police Commission opened its Dec. 12 meeting by recognizing seven civilians who intervened in a violent robbery outside the San Francisco Academy of Music on Nov. 19. Sergeant Marty Laylor described the attack: a wanted parolee assaulted a 21-year-old student and attempted to take his laptop; multiple bystanders intervened, restrained the suspect until police arrived and rendered first aid.
Sergeant Laylor named James Slater, Michael Deagan, Steven Ice and Robert Crockett among those who rushed to the victim—s aid. The chief and commission presented certificates of appreciation and called the citizens— actions "heroic." Chief Fong thanked the rescuers for putting themselves at risk and noted that city policy generally advises victims not to resist theft, but praised the bystanders for stopping a violent assault.
The commission said it will present certificates in person at Northern Station for honorees unable to attend the meeting.
