Police Commission recommends board approve Tarver settlement after closed-session review

An attorney for one of the plaintiffs addressed the commission during the public comment period about the settlement, saying she had been named in an appeal and retained appellate counsel, Chuck DeLario, who was later paid $5,000 from her personal funds. She told commissioners she would waive $8,000 in interest on the court-awarded attorney—s fees and the $5,000 she paid as part of resolving the matter and offered copies of the court—s order on fees for the panel to review.
Commissioner Joe Veronese said he would vote no for reasons disclosed during the closed session. President Teresa Sparks called the roll and recorded the motion as carrying 4–1.
The action was placed on the consent calendar and followed the commission—s closed-session conference with legal counsel under state law and local administrative code provisions. The attorney—s public remarks asked the commission to expedite administrative steps needed to move the settlement to the Board of Supervisors.
The commission did not adopt any additional public conditions or modifications to the settlement in open session. The recommendation will be transmitted to the Board of Supervisors for final approval according to the city—s administrative process.
