DPH reports low COVID case rate and steady vaccine progress; hospitalizations remain low

Director Grant Colfax briefed the Health Commission on June 1 that San Francisco's COVID-19 metrics were encouraging but that the city would continue to watch for changes as state restrictions ease on June 15.
Colfax reported a case rate of about 1.59 per 100,000 residents, compared with a December peak near 46 per 100,000. He said cumulative confirmed cases in San Francisco stood near 36,709 and that 546 residents had died of COVID-19 to date. Across nine city hospitals, Colfax said about 11 people were hospitalized with COVID-19, including six in intensive care units.
On vaccination he said the city continues to lead relative to many peers: "Two thirds of the eligible population has now received a complete vaccination series," he said, and he reported particularly high uptake among older adults. Colfax noted that mass vaccination sites are winding down and the department will continue to pivot to clinics, neighborhood access sites and mobile teams to reach remaining unvaccinated residents. He also said the city is reviewing forthcoming state guidance and new Cal/OSHA employer rules.
Colfax closed by saying DPH will continue to prioritize accessible, low-barrier vaccination options and monitor the June 15 statewide changes carefully.
