DPH names acting CIO as EHR/EPIC project continues; national search planned

Greg Wagner, the Department of Public Health chief financial officer, told commissioners that Chief Information Officer Bill Kim departed last week and that Deputy CIO Winona Mendolovich has been named acting CIO. Wagner said Mendolovich has overseen the department's EHR/EPIC project for several years and will provide continuity while the department conducts a national search for a permanent CIO.
Wagner said staff is interviewing for an EPIC program director and that the department is recruiting a chief information security officer; the security position is being supported by the Department of Technology's recruitment resources. He said the EPIC program is now in a build phase, that the team is in place, and that managers will report periodically to the commission on progress and any issues.
Commissioners asked about hiring timelines and the market for senior IT talent. Wagner said the EPIC program director hire should be relatively quick, that the security hire will benefit from shared recruitment resources, and that the department expects to fill roles within a few months but could not give exact dates. Director Garcia and others noted DHR has a streamlining process for IT hiring and that EPIC work is attractive to candidates.
