The Department of Public Health director updated commissioners on staff outreach following the national election, saying the department held three town halls to hear concerns, provide managers with presentation tools and reassure staff and clients that no local policy changes have occurred. Director Barbara Garcia said the mayor has made clear the city will continue to be a sanctuary city and encouraged people to seek services.
Deputy Director Colleen Chaala said the town halls focused on practical messaging for managers and self-care for staff, and that the department has posted materials on its website and distributed postcards and flyers at service centers to reassure clients. Chaala described federal-level signals that could affect sanctuary policies and the Affordable Care Act but emphasized that nothing had changed locally and that the department is monitoring developments while coordinating with the mayors office and legislative delegations.
Commissioners requested the talking points and manager materials for community-sharing; staff agreed to provide web links and printouts. Commissioners also discussed the departments need to review budgets and vacancy realignments in light of possible changes to federal funding streams.
