Health Department probes quinceaera candy that sickened 19; labs find THC in gummies and patients
Summary
San Francisco Health Department reported 19 people were hospitalized after consuming gummy-ring candies at a Mission District quinceaera on Aug. 6; lab tests found THC in the candies and in patient toxicology screens, and all were discharged within days as police continue an investigation.
The San Francisco Department of Public Health told the Health Commission that an August 6 incident at a Mission District quinceaera resulted in 19 people becoming ill after consuming gummy-ring candies that later tested positive for THC, the main psychoactive compound in cannabis.
Director Garcia said the departments investigation, supported by the San Francisco office of the California Poison Control Center, found 12 hospitalized patients with toxicology screens positive for THC and lab confirmation of THC in the candies. All 19 patients were taken to hospitals on Saturday and discharged by the following Monday, Garcia said.
