Commission previews Tobacco 21 resolution after clinic screening gains

The committee previewed a draft resolution that, if adopted by the commission and later by the Board of Supervisors, would prohibit tobacco retailers from selling tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco and electronic cigarettes, to people aged 18, 19 and 20. Staff explained the decision to call out those ages explicitly so the local ordinance would build on, rather than conflict with, state law, which already prohibits sales under age 18.
Commissioners discussed ensuring the resolution language covers newer nicotine delivery products and asked staff to add a whereas clause describing the expected local impact. Supervisor Wiener is identified by staff as the likely sponsor if the measure reaches the Board of Supervisors. The commission did not take final action on the resolution; staff said a formal vote and resolution text will be considered at a future meeting.
