HSS well-being assessment shows higher scores tied to lower costs; workplace diabetes-prevention pilot shows better retention and weight loss on-site

Well-being Manager Stephanie Fisher presented HSS’s internal well-being assessment results and interim findings from a Kaiser-partnered diabetes-prevention randomized pilot.
Fisher told the board that members with higher well-being scores had significantly lower claims and fewer self-reported days off; staff reported that about 20% of employees completed the well-being assessment. The presentation identified key drivers of higher well-being scores (regular physical activity, more frequent healthy eating, employer support) and flagged that a small share of members account for a large share of costs.
On the diabetes-prevention pilot (NIH/CDC-based DPP curriculum delivered in two arms: in-person worksite vs online), Kaiser and HSS recruited 158 participants, randomized to two arms. Of those, 54 in the worksite arm and 43 in the online arm returned for 12-month physical measurements and form the basis of the reported pre/post outcomes. Among those with paired measurements, worksite participants were more likely to sustain weight loss at 12 months; higher session attendance correlated with greater weight loss. Participant feedback favored in-person coaching, food-tracking and educational content; online participants more often cited format and loss of interest as participation barriers. Fisher and Kaiser noted the study’s limitations: drop-off in follow-up measurements and that biometric blood measures (A1C) were not gathered as part of the study protocol to keep participation burdens lower.
