Aon Hewitt audit finds high accuracy in UnitedHealthcare claims sample; board asks for vendor response
Summary
Aon Hewitt presented a stratified, statistically valid audit of 220 UnitedHealthcare claims that showed strong payment and financial accuracy, a small number of in‑sample errors (~$8,400) and some turnaround exceptions; the board asked that the audit report be shared with UHC and requested a remediation/response plan.

Aon Hewitt presented the results of a stratified random audit of 220 UnitedHealthcare claims covering a six‑month sampling period. The auditor said the 220 claims represented just under $1,000,000 of paid benefits within the sample and identified approximately $8,400 of in‑sample financial errors. The audit applied five key metrics — financial accuracy, overall accuracy, payment accuracy, and turnaround times at 14 and 30 days — and placed UHC’s performance primarily in the "good" to "excellent" range, with modest slipping on some 30‑day turnaround measures.
Aon recommended sharing the audit report with UnitedHealthcare and requesting a corrective plan addressing training or systemic issues where found. "Our recommended next steps are to share the audit report with UnitedHealthcare and wait for a response in terms of the findings," Aon told the board. The board asked Aon to return with more context, including year‑over‑year comparisons so commissioners could see whether UHC’s performance is improving.
Commissioners discussed the audit’s 90‑percent confidence interval and a reported margin of precision; Aon confirmed the audit’s margin was approximately ±3.68% at the stated confidence level. The board took no immediate punitive action, but asked staff to request a vendor response and report back to the board.
