The Health Service Board voted to approve a citywide wellness plan after hearing a detailed presentation from wellness manager Stephanie Fisher on the program’s launch and early results.
Fisher told the board the kickoff “went incredibly well,” reporting partnerships with Recreation and Parks and describing programming offered at the wellness center. She said Rec and Parks delivered 38 group-exercise classes between May 19 and July 11 that produced 854 recorded class participations (the presenter noted these counts are not unique individuals and repeat attendance is common). Fisher said group exercise accounted for most visits and that the wellness center recorded roughly 700 center visits overall in the first months of operation. The board heard that city-hall classes will be free beginning Sept. 1 and that a citywide “champion” training for department-level wellness leaders is scheduled for September.
In discussion, commissioners asked about capacity constraints, how nutrition and healthy eating are addressed alongside exercise and how retirees might access offerings. Fisher said the program provides nutrition-focused seminars and health coaching in addition to exercise classes, and that some city-hall classes already include many retirees; staff will expand outreach and e‑news communications. Labor representatives including Bob Muscat and Rebecca Rhine praised the program and urged sustained funding and outcome tracking.
President Frazier moved approval of the wellness plan; the board seconded the motion and voted unanimously to adopt it. Director Dodd said the plan has been shared with the mayor’s office and department heads and will be distributed broadly after finalization. The board directed staff to continue reporting participation metrics and champion training outcomes at future meetings as the program scales.
