HPC approves rooftop generator at 430 Bush/555 Pine with condition to set screening back

The Historic Preservation Commission on Dec. 4 approved a major permit to install a rooftop generator and associated screening at 430 Bush Street to provide emergency power redundancy for the connected building at 555 Pine Street.
Planning staff found the proposed rooftop generator and painted screening compatible with Article 11 and the Secretary of the Interior Standards for Rehabilitation and recommended approval. Michelle Langley, planning staff, explained the screening will be painted to match the secondary elevation and the installation will be largely invisible from primary public vantage points on Bush Street.
An AT&T representative (project sponsor) said the generator is required to maintain communications services and emergency connectivity and that rooftop options at 555 Pine were infeasible. The sponsor explained fuel tanks and distribution piping already serve generators in the connected 555 Pine property; the rooftop installation on 430 Bush will be supplied via welded piping and includes a day tank on the rooftop skid.
Commissioners asked technical questions about seismic and fuel‑line safety and requested a modest setback for the screening. Commissioner Wright requested the screen be moved two feet from the face of the west wall; the motion as amended carried unanimously 7–0. Staff will include the two‑foot setback as a condition of approval.
