The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously June 5 to add five businesses to the city’s Legacy Business Registry, recognizing long-running neighborhood institutions that commissioners and residents said contribute to San Francisco’s cultural fabric.
Planning staff presented the nominations, describing the Verdi Club at 2424 Mariposa (founded 1916, Art Deco building, important community venue), Robert’s Corned Meats (a multigenerational wholesale and retail meat distributor), MPA Design (a landscape architecture firm founded in 1969 with a local portfolio), Joanne’s Beauty Boutique (a 48-year African American–owned hair salon on Fillmore Street) and Bob’s Donuts and Pastries (a 71-year Polk Street storefront open 24 hours).
Members of the public and business representatives told the commission how each business serves community needs. “We are excited to continue forward with this and other types of events,” Verdi Club president Dolores Homosack said, citing the club’s revival and expanded membership. Bob’s Donuts’ family representative described three generations of ownership and thanked staff for help with the application.
Commissioners praised the variety of businesses, noting the cultural and economic roles each plays. Commissioner Foley called the registry “a way to honor” venues that have endured during difficult economic times, while Commissioner Vergara said the signs and storefronts “reinforce” neighborhood identity.
The commission moved to approve items 4a–4e, adopting the staff recommendation that each business be added to the Legacy Business Registry. The motion carried on a roll-call vote of 7–0.
Next steps: staff will prepare the formal resolutions for each business to be added to the Legacy Business Registry and coordinate any plaque or publicity outreach specified in the registry procedures.
