Historic commission continues Alexandria Theater landmarking at Supervisor Chan's request

The Historic Preservation Commission on Aug. 16 voted unanimously to continue consideration of landmark-designation legislation for the Alexandria Theater to Sept. 20, 2023 after staff read a letter from District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan asking the commission to wait until an appeal of a notice of violation had been heard.
Kelly Grove, representing Supervisor Chan's office, read the supervisor's letter into the record, saying the appeal of a notice of violation was scheduled for the same date and that delaying the landmarking would allow the appeals process to conclude and ensure the office has sufficient information to pursue legislation without imposing undue hardship on the property owner.
Michael Petrella of Friends and Allies of the Castro Theatre called in to oppose the continuance and urged the commission to hear the matter that day, asking what elements of the Alexandria's marquee, blade, lobby and other features would be preserved.
After public comment the commission voted to continue the item to the scheduled continuance date; staff noted the supervisor's letter is posted on the commission's website. The continuance postpones formal consideration so that unresolved appeals can proceed and additional information can be gathered.
The continuance was recorded as a unanimous 5–0 vote; the item will return to the commission's agenda on the new date.
