Historic Preservation Commission approves three businesses for San Francisco legacy registry

The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission unanimously approved three nominations to the city's Legacy Business Registry on April 19, endorsing Piero's Pizzeria, Ying Hing Kee and MyTree Compassionate Care.

Planning staff presented the nominations. Elena Moore described Piero's as a Sunset District pizzeria established in 1967 and now owned by Corinne Pusawang, noting its role as a neighborhood gathering place and supporter of local events. Moore also detailed Ying Hing Kee, a print shop established in 1976 that has provided bilingual materials and cultural goods to Chinatown.

Wesley summarized MyTree Compassionate Care, a licensed residential care facility in the Castro founded in 1987 by Esan Dorsey, which staff said has served more than 2,000 people living with AIDS and now provides broader medical respite and gender-affirming services. Staff recommended resolutions to add all three to the registry.

During public comment, a speaker for Piero's highlighted the restaurant's community partnerships, sustainable sourcing and neighborhood events. Commissioners praised the nominations, emphasizing each business's community ties and adaptive responses during the pandemic. Commissioner Black said, "They're all really important and they reflect San Francisco." Commissioner Johns moved for approval; the motion was seconded and the commission voted 6 to 0, with Commissioner So absent.

The additions will be processed according to the Legacy Business Registry procedures and appear on the registry after staff completes the required administrative steps and resolution filings.
