The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission on Feb. 17 voted unanimously to continue consideration of an extension request for the temporary observation (Sky) Wheel in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse to a March 3 hearing, after receiving extensive presentations from Rec and Park staff and more than a hundred public comments both supporting and opposing the extension.
Michelle Taylor of the Planning Department summarized the case history: the wheel had been approved as a temporary installation in January 2020 and was slated for removal in March 2021. Because the attraction operated only sporadically during the pandemic, Recreation & Parks requested an operational extension—up to four years—to offset vendor hardship and to support the department’s stated recovery objectives.
