The action followed a staff presentation and public testimony from historians, LGBTQ preservation advocates and the property owner. Jacob Bentelmann, representing Supervisor Rafael Mandelmann, described Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon as “icons of the LGBTQ rights movement” and said the designation would help recognize underrepresented sites tied to lesbian history in San Francisco.
