The San Francisco Historic Preservation Commission voted unanimously, 7-0, on Jan. 6 to recommend that five long-standing local businesses be added to the city’s legacy business registry.
Planning staff presented five applications: American Conservatory Theater (ACT), a 54-year nonprofit theater and school at 415 Gary Street; Center Hardware, a 74-year hardware store in Dogpatch; Pipe Dreams, a 42-year head shop in Haight-Ashbury; Blade Runners Hair Studio, a 29-year salon at 1792 Haight Street; and 20 Fourth Street Dental, a 35-year dental practice owned by Dr. Bernardo Gonzalez.
Staff told the commission they support adding each business to the registry because of their longevity, community contributions, educational programs, neighborhood ties and cultural significance. Katie Wilburn, Gigi Gunther and Kalyani Agnihotri presented the applications and recommended resolutions in support.
Members of the public and community groups spoke in favor. Carrie Young of San Francisco Heritage praised Dr. Gonzalez for "contributions to the Latino community" and urged continued support for the legacy business strategy program. Jamie Gantner of Center Hardware and Eric Brezet of ACT thanked staff and elected-offices that helped move their applications forward. Dr. Gonzalez said he was "honored" to be recognized and thanked the commission and community partners.
Commissioners commented in support, describing the businesses as cultural anchors, educational resources and neighborhood mainstays. After a motion and second, the commission voted one-by-one for each commissioner: Black — yes; Foley — yes; Johns — yes; Pearlman — yes; Soh — yes; Matsuda — yes; Hyland — yes; the motion passed unanimously 7 to 0.
