Historic Preservation Commission recommends three legacy businesses for registry

The Historic Preservation Commission on June 21 recommended three businesses for inclusion on San Francisco’s legacy business registry: the Analytical Psychology Club, Izzy’s Steaks and Chops, and Rookie Ricardo’s Records.
Stephanie Cisneros of the Planning Department presented the nominations. Staff found all three applicants met the registry criteria. Cisneros said the Analytical Psychology Club, founded in 1940, maintains a library of about 3,000 items begun in 1970 and offers lectures and support groups. Izzy’s Steaks and Chops (founded 1987) and Rookie Ricardo’s Records (opened 1987) were described as neighborhood fixtures; the packet included a 2012 city certificate of honor for Izzy’s.
Multiple supporters addressed the commission. Jana Hutchinson, president of the Analytical Psychology Club, described the library’s rare materials and community value. Richard Vivian (Rookie Ricardo’s) recounted his shop’s history and community ties; other speakers said legacy businesses help keep neighborhood commerce diverse amid rising rents.
Commissioners praised the nominations, noting how the registry preserves neighborhood stories, and moved to recommend approval of all three nominations. The motion passed unanimously 5 to 0.
