The Historic Preservation Commission reviewed a National Register nomination for the Swedish American Hall at 2168 Market Street on July 17 and unanimously recommended approval subject to aligning the National Register period of significance with the local landmark designation.
Staff (Stephanie Cisneros) noted the building — constructed in 1907 and designed by August Nordin — is already a local landmark and that the landmark report sets the period of significance as 1907–1975. The National Register nomination set a later end date (1980) and invoked criteria-consideration G for properties achieving significance within the past 50 years; department staff advised either matching the existing local period (1907–1975) or providing additional justification for extending the period to 1980.
Commissioners agreed it would be preferable to align the two records and moved to adopt a resolution recommending National Register listing with the period of significance set to 1907–1975. The motion carried unanimously. Staff will forward the commission’s recommendation with the suggested correction.
